Turmeric Chai Tea

Chai simply means “tea” in Hindi, and masala chai means “spiced tea”. Popular in India, where street vendors are kept busy serving thousands all day long, this 5,000+ year old drink originated as an Ayurvedic tonic.

Turmeric Chai Tea

Our Organic Turmeric Chai Tea has different ingredients to the classic Chai and its also Caffeine Free. Its a real winter warmer aromatic, spicy, smooth & uplifting with organic ingredients Cinnamon; Ginger root; Turmeric root; Liquorice root; Orange peel and Clove.

You cannot open Facebook or instagram without without seeing turmeric pop up somewhere…. you will see everything from turmeric smoothies to turmeric porridge, and one of the biggest caffeine free trends of the moment a turmeric latte !

As a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Herbalist I am very familiar with the traditional application of this spice. Turmeric is a member of the Curcuma botanical group, which is also a part of the ginger family. It is commonly used in India not only in cooking but as a source of dye and food colouring because of it’s beautiful bright yellow colour; Its also used during ceremonies – The Haldi (turmeric) ceremony is an old pre-wedding ritual. The bride and groom are slathered with turmeric paste and then bathed to “beautify” them before they get married.

TURMERIC IN TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), turmeric or Jiang Huang is:

Very WARMING to the body; which helps to treat blood stasis, and promotes the flow of Qi. In TCM we believe that when Blood and Qi are stuck, there is pain. When obstruction is removed, pain is relieved.

Traditional use: Shoulder pain), rheumatic pain, chest and hypochondriac (rib area) and menstrual pain.

Turmeric is not for everyone as its quite heating and herbalists will moderate this effect by prescribing it in conjunction with other herbs, however there is scientific research which confirms that most notably the curcuminoids in turmeric has an anti inflammatory effect. Mostly these trials used standardised doses of extracted curcuminoids and NOT the whole powdered spice which is far better for someone who suffers with acid reflux for whom the powder would aggravate this condition. Also when you use the whole powder, you cannot guarantee how much of the curcuminoids are present when you use its much better to opt for a high strength turmeric extract that delivers standardised measured doses of curcuminoids. We use Biocare Curcumin at Life Rituals. https://www.liferituals.co.uk//product/microcell-curcumin-plus/

When given in a therapeutic dosage (much much more than a cup of tea) in Chinese Medicine it is advised to avoid it during pregnancy, during heavy menstruation or if you have a heat or Yin deficiency heat body constitution. If you are suffering from an inflammatory condition and unsure whether curcumin is for you can consult Jo for some advice regarding acupuncture treatment and herbal medicine with Jo at Life Rituals.

A SIMPLE WAY TO GET TURMERIC INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

At Life Rituals we like our own chai in the traditional manner, combining it with almond milk (or whole milk if you prefer) and no sugar as the cinnamon and liquorice are naturally sweet. Making chai takes a few more minutes than steeping a regular cup of tea, but your efforts will be rewarded.

We enjoy turmeric tea latte-style, with a creamy almond or soy milk base. If you don’t want it quite as rich, you can make and then add milk at the end, as you would with English tea or coffee. Turmeric tea is so easy to make.

HOW TO MAKE LIFE RITUALS ORGANIC TURMERIC CHAI with milk.

Makes 2 cups

  1. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Add 4 teaspoons of Life Rituals Turmeric Chai Tea.
  3. Boil uncovered for an additional 5 minutes.
  4. Add 2 cups of whole milk (or milk substitute – we like almond), and bring to a boil again.
  5. Remove from heat immediately (before it boils over) and steep covered for 5 minutes.
  6. Strain and enjoy it hot, or chill it in the fridge for a yummy ? iced chai.

WHAT ABOUT IN THE SUMMER?

If you’re thinking you would like turmeric tea, but are getting into the warm weather summer groove, you can keep a jar of your turmeric tea in the refrigerator and have a glass over ice any time you feel like you could use a pick-me-up. It’s just as tasty! Other Life Ritual Organic teas that are great cold are Cleanse and Detox Ritual, Energising Ritual.

The Alternative Nightcap

Whatever happened to tea? What was once the UK’s national drink has made way for its caffeinated counterpart; a 2017 survey by Monin showed that 61% of British people prefer coffee to tea, spending over £600/year on average on their caffeine fix. However, while coffee culture is certainly booming, there is a quiet revolution in the (boiling) waters. Shops blending their own unique loose teas blends like Life Rituals – Oakham and cafes like Fika – Oakham putting loose leaf teas on the menu are cropping up all over the UK, offering their expertise to those searching for an alternative to the flat white.

Tea is an age-old drink surrounded by rituals and legacy; Traditionally, loose leaf tea is prepared by pouring hot water over tea leaves and allowing them to infuse; different blends may take anywhere from one to five minutes to brew.

In our increasingly fast-paced lives the routine of preparing a loose leaf tea can help signal to our brain that it’s time to start slowing down in preparation for sleep. What’s more, a lot of herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, and a great many more boast significant health benefits that can get to work on our bodies overnight.

Why Jo at Life Rituals recommends Bedtime Ritual tea:

This is by far our most popular herbal blend. Valerian, one of the central earthy flavor in this blend, and part from its sedative effect its also effective at ‘slowing the mind’ for those prone to anxiety and worry. Another main ingredient is Chamomile is the central flavour, and has been used as a natural sleep aid for centuries. The other key ingredients, Passionflower, Linden has been celebrated by many tea drinkers over the years for its ability to soothe stress and feelings of anxiety. Not forgetting Peppermint to sooth the digestion system and promote calm.

So what did Life Rituals neighbours Fika & Cavell think of this alternative nightcap, did it truly live up to its promised effects.

“Getting enough sleep, and the right kind of sleep is a constant source of distraction for me as a business owner with two small children, so when Jo suggested I try the Bedtime Tea, I jumped at the chance. I am always looking for natural solutions and Jo’s tea ticked all the boxes. It’s taste is subtle and delicate and I have to confess that I did genuinely feel the benefit. I definitely found it easier drifting off to sleep and felt more relaxed. Will definitely be continuing with the tea!”

– Jo, Founder Fika, Oakham

“Really loving this tea. It’s taste is very pleasant and although I don’t have a problem with getting off to sleep, I do with waking early. Changing my tea habits, as I drink caffeinated before bed, was always something I planned on doing but never get round to. I actually got this this for my husband, after drinking for a couple of days my sleep has been far more restful. Think I need to continue with this. Thanks for the recommendation Jo, from both of us.”

Treating Colds and Flus Naturally

Protect Yourself This Winter; Treating Colds and Flus Naturally

 Treating Colds and Flus Naturally

Winter is almost upon us and prevalence of colds and flus’ tend to the rise. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it’s believed we should live harmoniously with our environment and adapt to this change. Winter is inactive, slow, cold and damp. It is the season of slowing down. It seems general expectation is to go to work or school and just “get on with it”, when we have a cold however pushing symptoms to the side can often prolong the illness.

In Chinese medicine ‘wind’ was said to be the bearer of the ten thousand evils, it disrupts our defence barrier allowing pathogens (bacteria or viruses) to enter the body. In Chinese herbal medicine there are volumes dedicated to the treatment of the common cold, or invasion of wind pathogens as it is otherwise known.

The bodies exterior defence can become can be undermined if you are sneezed on, rained on or under a fan or air-conditioning for too long, all of which weaken its protective function.  If your general health is compromised eg. times of high stress, or the virus is particularly strong, it is at this point that you are likely to develop cold and flu symptoms.

In Chinese medicine a cold can penetrate through several layers of defence which is related to when we see cold and flu symptoms change very quickly. In all cases prompt treatment brings the most effective results. The longer one waits the longer it takes to clear the virus.

Jo George Acupuncturist and Chinese herbal practitioner at Life Rituals gives some handy tips for some natural treatments for colds and flu to follow to prevent getting sick this winter.

Step by step guide to cold symptoms and how & when to treat them

Early warning signs that your exterior defence is challenged –

  • Fatigue
  • Itchy ears
  • Tight/stiff neck
  • Sneezing
  • Dry or scratchy throat
  • Dislike of wind and cold

When you feel these these symptoms act quickly and treat accordingly and you will have a very high chance of avoiding an illness all together.

Jos Recommendations:

  • Drink Life Rituals Protection Tea with honey.
  • Eat a nourishing soup, stew made with plenty of chicken broth, fresh ginger, spring onion and garlic
  • REST. Get into bed early with socks on to try and induce a light sweat
  • Acupuncture. This is the most effective time for a treatment
  • Make your own fermented foods like Kimchi/Saukraut and drink Kefir which contain many compounds and nutrients, like biotin and folate, that help kick your immune system into gear and protect your cells and helps modulate the immune system and inhibit many unwanted bacteria growth. Easy to make these probitocs with our kephir & fermented foods. Get inspired with recipes from fermented book.

Early Symptoms of Cold or flu

This is the point that the symptoms start becoming hard to ignore.  The virus is still considered to be on the exterior of the body and in Chinese Medicine viewed as easier to treat.  If you continue to Ignore the symptoms, the virus may go deeper into the body making it much harder to treat.

  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Sore throat.
  • Slight dry, non-productive cough.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Body aches or a mild headache.
  • Low-grade fever and/or chills.

Jos Recommendations At This Point:

  • Runny Nose – at the early onset of a runny nose or cold you can take ginger, garlic and some hot tea to prevent it getting worse. A warm bath and getting under the covers with plenty of blankets to sweat it out help.
  • Sore throat – if you are suffering from a sore throat, avoid anything spicy and sweet foods. This includes garlic, horseradish, fennel, onions and red meat. We should be eating more cooling foods like fresh green vegetables, lemon, honey, apples, pears, peppermint, fish etc. whilst drinking plenty of fluids, aim for 3L a day.
  • Dry cough – avoid anything spicy and sweet in nature. This includes garlic, ginger, onions, chilli, sugar, chocolate etc. This can cause the cough to be worse if we have anything spicy or sweet as well as fried foods. Drink plenty of fluids.
    • Get an acupuncture treatment and some herbal medicine with Jo at Life Rituals quickly, if she can catch the virus while it is still in the exterior of the body then there is still a really good chance of avoiding a full blown illness.
    • Take the day off work/school and rest.
    • Do an old fashioned steam inhalation with a little eucalyptus oil added to hot water
    • Drink anti oxidant packed herb tea like Life Rituals Protection Tea with anti inflammatory organic honey and increase adaptogens which help moderate the immune system drink teas with this herb in Energising Ritual; Daytime Calm Ritual or Eight Treasures Vitality Ritual teas.
    • Eat a nourishing soup, stew with plenty of chicken broth, fresh ginger, spring onion and garlic.
  • Increase Vitamin C is great to help prevent colds and flus and increase our immune system. It reduces acidity in the body, and is an anti-bacterial. Make sure you get enough vitamin C in your diet, you can do this with food and drink – try Protection Ritual; Cleanse and Detox Ritual; or Unwind and Uplift Ritual Teas which are all packed full of high content organic Vit C ingredients. We also recommend taking a Vit C supplement. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day and drink at least 1.5L of water, preferably warm water.

Chicken Broth – Nourishing soup

Chicken Broth

Full Symptoms of a Cold or Flu

  • Very sore and swollen throat
  • Headache
  • Cough becoming heavier and more productive
  • Congestion with clear to yellow mucus
  • irritability
  • fever
  • fatigue

As the  virus travels deeper into the body symptoms develop quickly and bacterial infection can develop.  As the mucus congestion changes colour from clear to white to yellow to green you can see, and feel, the infection setting in.

Jos Recommendations at this stage:

  • Get an acupuncture treatment and some herbal medicine.  You’ll be needing something stronger at this point, but treatment will help you move through the illness much faster.
  • If you have phlegm you should be avoiding all dairy, cold and sweet foods including ice cream, milk, cheese, chocolates, sweets, etc. This causes more phlegm and mucus to build up in the nose and throat.
  • Jump into bed and stay there.

Going Caffeine Free

Going Caffeine Free

Coffee and tea are two of the world’s beverages of choice, and while many people understand that coffee contains caffeine and it is consumed for its stimulatory effects, it’s important to note that tea also contains caffeine.

The caffeine component found in the camellia sinensis plant contains varying degrees of caffeine, depending on how and when the plant is harvested and processed. Dependent on the growing techniques and treatments that the tea leaves undergo, they are then classified as white tea, green tea, yellow tea, oolong tea, black tea or matcha tea, all of which are caffeinated but to varying levels.

At Life Rituals we hand blend both caffeinated and non caffeinated teas, but with a purpose. Our herbalist inspired range of wellness tea infusions are unique imaginative blends with traditional benefits and remarkable flavours and an excellent way to reduce your caffeine intake. We have a passion for health, vitality and optimal wellness. We create herbal tea blends that focus on a variety of ailments, from Insomnia – try Bedtime Ritual, Stress – Try Daytime Calm, to Energy – Try Energising Ritual, and Indigestion – Try Digestive Ritual.

Consuming caffeine can become habitual and should be done in moderation, however, caffeine consumption is not one-size-fits-all. The amount of caffeine a person can tolerate before symptoms start to occur will be affected by factors including the person’s body weight, metabolism, medications they may be taking, how much food has been eaten before the caffeine, and the type of caffeine consumed. The caffeine from chocolate and soft drink will affect you differently to the caffeine found in tea, and there can be some benefits to consuming caffeinated teas. The caffeine from tea is released at a slower rate by the body than the caffeine from coffee, offering a more balanced, longer lasting release. This offers a gentle and uplifting effect, rather than a more acute spike and drop in energy levels. We use Sencha Organic Green Tea in our Energising Ritual Tea blend combined with other carefully selected ingredients to help keep your mind and senses sharp and operating at optimum levels during stressful periods. We have several other caffeinated tea blends with organic jasmine in our Eight Treasures Vitality Ritual, and organic white tea in our Unwind and Uplift Ritual that are still perfectly healthy for you in moderation; The extensive benefits of green tea are hard not to ignore see our previous blog on green tea.

The high levels of antioxidants found in tea can also help to slow the absorption of caffeine resulting in a gentle release into the system and a longer period of alertness. The greatest effect on the final caffeine content of tea is directly related to water temperature and length of brewing time – the longer you brew the tea and the higher the water temperature, the higher the caffeine content of the end product.

It is important to be cautious when consuming caffeine, but caffeine in moderation in tea has many benefits. Having larger amounts of caffeine in your diet on a regular basis may cause short-term issues including muscle twitching, increased heart rate, and stimulation of the nervous system, which can lead to anxiety in some people. It can also affect sleep patterns and can cause shorter periods of deep sleep, which leaves you feeling tired on waking. The good news is that if your one of those people who are sensitive to caffeine then we have plenty of delicious tea blends like Digestive Ritual; Cleanse and Detox Ritual, Bedtime Ritual, and Protection Ritual; that do not contain any caffeine.

There are a variety of fantastic wellness tea infusions here at Life Rituals Organic Teas which are unique imaginative blends with traditional benefits and remarkable flavours and an excellent way to reduce your caffeine intake, offer a caffeine free option and give your body a break from caffeine, while you still get to enjoy a healthy tasty hot drink.

Fermentation

Fermented Foods – Looking After Your Digestive System

The way that food is produced together with the changes of behaviour around cooking and eating, have profoundly altered meal times. Often we are too rushed to think about the consequences of what and how we are eating.

Recent cutting edge Western research has given Traditional Chinese medicine a new perspective on thousands of years of ancient wisdom. We now know that the origins of many diseases are in the gut and in today’s world we can no longer ignore the effects of superbugs (anti-biotic resistant), toxic foods, and changing lifestyles.

The digestive system in Chinese medicine has always been seen for centuries as a vital key in treating many health disorders, now we have the evidence. The gut is at the centre of the development of complex modern illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, AIDS, chronic allergies, leaky gut syndrome and food sensitivities. Together with digestive imbalances such as IBS, constipation, heartburn, reflux, Crohns Disease, and Celiac Disease, to name a handful.

Kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, miso and kefir – all fermented foods and drinks – have been around for centuries, but suddenly they are all the rage. The reason? They are supposedly packed full of gut-healthy microorganisms, and we are finally waking up to the trillions of microorganisms that live in our guts (AKA the gut microbiome).

Harbouring a flourishing gut flora has been linked to lower obesity, fewer autoimmune conditions and digestion problems, longer lifespan, and good brain function. Read on to find out how to improve yours…

Make & Eat Probiotic Foods Daily

Kefir is one of the highest probiotic foods you can eat to support our guts ‘microbiome ‘- our personal mix of gut bacteria – and homemade kefir far outranks any store-bought variety. Current research supports the use of Kephir daily to improve IBS and digestive issues, mood and energy levels and to dampens down inflammation throughout the body, such as in allergic skin conditions like excaema. It also boosts immunity which can impact the state of your daily life and health dramatically.

Kefir is made using starter “grains,” which in reality are a combination of bacteria and yeasts that interact with the milk to make the lightly fermented drink that even lactose intolerant people can drink! It can be made from any source of milk, such as goat, sheep, cow, soy, rice or coconut. It can even be made using coconut water. kefir is a probiotic food that contains many bioactive compounds, including as many as 30 strains of good bacteria that help fight against ill health and disease.

Life Rituals Kefir Making Kits are easy to use and perfect to brew your own PRO BIOTIC DRINK milk kefir and water kefir. The kit combines a specifically designed glass jar, with swizzle stick, and printed booklet with 30+ recipes and squeezer to get you started making your own pro – biotic drink.

The Kefhir Making Kit has been specifically designed to make home kefir making as simple as possible. Simply add kefir grains and your liquid of choice (milk or sugar water).

Eat Fermented Foods – Kimchi, Sauerkraut – Daily

Fermented foods, have finally started to get the mass media attention they deserve. We are very excited because we’ve got our hands on some Fermenting Starter Kits. The kit is a great way to get started and takes the ‘fear’ out of the fermentation process…..zero maintenance.

The live bacteria or probiotics contained in fermented foods are certainly great for our digestive tracts – they restore the proper balance of bacteria in gut (diminished from years of gobbling antibiotic drugs and chlorine-laced tap water); are rich in enzymes, vitamins and nutrients; and because they’re already breaking down, ferments are easier to digest and help the digestive system run much more smoothly. In that respect, eating fermented foods is a bit like having an oil change for your stomach. You can create all kinds of fermented foods from kimchi to sauerkraut with our starter kits.

Let’s start with one of the easiest recipes to make with the starter kit; Kimchi; Its packed full of antioxidants and has 1000 times more lactobacillus than yogurt so it’s amazing for your gut and digestion; Many Koreans credit kimchi for their long lives and statistically, Koreans boast one of the lowest cancer rates in the world. Baechu, or napa cabbage, kimchi is made by lacto-fermentation, the same process that creates sauerkraut and traditional dill pickles. In the first stage, the cabbage is soaked in a salty brine that kills off harmful bacteria. In the second stage, the remaining Lactobacillus bacteria (the good guys!) convert sugars into lactic acid, which preserves the vegetables and gives them that wonderful, tangy flavour.

Kimchi with our starter kit

Simply shred a napa cabbage, add chilli (we used Korean Choripdong Red Pepper Powder for Kimchi (Coarse) , garlic, ginger, scallions, brine (salt & water), fish sauce to flavour. Next we pushed down in the jar so it’s covered, then … now we leave it out for a month. The one-way valve allows CO2 to escape, while preventing oxygen and contaminants from reaching the cabbage, so it can’t mould. The flip–top lid makes the jar really makes it zero-maintenance – there’s no daily “burping” and you can easily unscrew and test for taste; when it’s tangy enough, push the lid down and refrigerate.

The kimchi keeps for a year – start eating it every day!

Fermenting kit

**Fermenting Kit Includes: Silver Wide reCAP POUR Cap, 24 ounce Mason Jar, reCAP Fermenter (waterless airlock + stopper), 4 ounce Mason Jar Weight, 2.5 ounce packet of Himalayan Pink Salt, instruction guide and 3 recipes for beginners (Ginger Carrots, Hot Sauce, & Salsa) + free download to eBook with 9 unique fermentation recipes!

Feed Your Gut Biome with Pre Biotic Food

If you were to view your microbiome as a garden, fibre would be your fertiliser. Foods containing the best fibre types for your microbes are called prebiotic foods which include artichokes, jerusalem artichokes, leeks, celery, chicory, onions and garlic. Variety is the top priority – the person who eats more diversity of plants in a week is the key…eating a rich diversity of food with occasional meat. This could just as easily be a way of describing the Mediterranean diet, with its kaleidoscope of fruit, veg, nuts, grains and legumes.

If you are inspired to consume more fibre, it’s best to start slowly especially if you have digestive problems – or you could end up with uncomfortable bloating and wind. Each gut is unique and one diet doesn’t fit all, so if you change your eating habits to no avail, try something else. You are on the right track, if you notice a change in your bowel habit. After a couple of days, your stools will get softer and you’ll be going more regularly. That’s a sign your microbes have changed for the better, and though they are working harder, they are happier.

Drink more Green Tea

One of the most exciting things about green tea is that its antimicrobial activities appear to be highly selective—so it goes after undesirable organisms, while leaving beneficial flora unscathed ! A number of studies have been undertaken to determine how green tea affects the gut, and the results either showed no harmful change, or that microbial composition was significantly improved with increased numbers of desirable species, including Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus.

One important reason green tea may help boost probiotic numbers (in addition to antimicrobial selectivity) is that it turns out to be an effective prebiotic—providing the perfect nutrition for your good bacteria to thrive. Green tea lets you enjoy the best of both worlds—supporting the good guys in your microbial community, while eating rid of the other unwanted bacterias.

We use Sencha Organic Green Tea in our Energising Ritual Tea combined with other carefully selected ingredients to help keep your mind and senses sharp and operating at optimum levels during stressful periods. Apart from the ‘super’ anti-oxident green tea, there are other reasons why this blend supports adrenal health and calms the nervous system, making it beneficial for alleviating stress in people who feel strung-out, and exhausted at the same time.

Fermented book

So, hopefully inspired to make your own probiotic food and drink we highly recommend the book Fermented with delicious recipes that are easily achievable at home. Chapters covering fruit and vegetables, milk, pulses, sourdough baking and drinks will introduce you to unique new flavours as well as traditional fermented vegetables such as German Sauerkraut and Korean Kimchi.  The author Charlotte Pike is a UK based food writer. Charlotte’s recipes are simple, delicious and really work.

And Finally Relax

Your digestion begins when our body is anticipating food. The smell and sight of food activate our salivary glands and prepare the pancreas to release digestive enzymes. Digestion is facilitated by the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is activated by relaxation, the sympathetic by action. When we eat food ‘on the run’ or come to the table stressed the sympathetic nervous system is dominant and energy and blood are shunted away from the digestive system toward the brain and muscles. Eating in a relaxed state benefits digestion, if we eat mindfully, savouring and appreciating our food, we notice when we are full.

Relaxation can also include attending to posture. If we eat slumped in an armchair or lying down we can interfere with the simple mechanics of digestion. The digestive organs don’t like to be compressed.

In Chinese medicine we understand that emotions and states of mind impact our Qi. Worry, the emotion associated with our digestive system, binds the Qi. This manifests as tension in the digestive system and inhibits our ability to digest information or emotions and indeed our food. Anger causes our Qi to rise. As digestion requires downward movement Chinese medicine eating when angry is not good for you.

Bon appetite…
